First semi-warm day of spring and I cracked the garage doors open for this one. There is something about training with fresh air coming in and sunlight on the floor that makes the whole session feel different. This is an upper day — part of the Upper/Lower/Upper/Lower/Full split I have been running through Fitbod.
The Setup
I train about 50/50 between the home garage gym and LA Fitness. The garage is convenient, zero commute, and on days like this — with the doors open and birds in the background — it is honestly better than any commercial gym. The equipment is simple but I have what I need for a solid upper session.
The Split: Upper/Lower/Upper/Lower/Full
Fitbod builds the programming for me. The Upper/Lower/Upper/Lower/Full split is one I have been running for a while — it hits each muscle group multiple times per week without overdoing it. Here is why it works:
- Upper (x2) — Chest, back, shoulders, arms. Twice a week means enough frequency to drive strength and hypertrophy without frying your joints.
- Lower (x2) — Quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves. Two lower days keep the legs honest.
- Full body (x1) — Ties everything together at the end of the week. Good for fat loss and overall conditioning.
Fitbod tracks volume and fatigue per muscle group and adjusts the weights and sets automatically. I do not have to think about programming — I just show up and execute.
Why the Garage Gym
No waiting for equipment. No wasted time. At LA Fitness I might have to orbit the bench press for ten minutes on a Monday. In the garage I load the bar and go. On a day like this — cool air, sun hitting the driveway, garage doors up — there is zero reason to drive anywhere.
The home gym does not need to be elaborate. A rack, a barbell, some plates, and a pair of adjustable dumbbells covers probably 80% of what you actually need for an upper body session.
The best training environment is the one you actually show up to. Sometimes that is LA Fitness. Today it was the garage with the doors open.
